ARTIST STATEMENT

The process of capturing and ordering images is full of possibilities. Filmmaking allows for elements and ideas to take on subtle nuances and interpretations for the viewer and myself. This appeals to my sense of life and its complexities.

The main characters in my films are females who have a distinctive perspective on American culture. I am drawn to these stories as I feel they are severely under-represented. I am interested in examining and breaking apart the female and male "roles" in our society so that we will be able to question why certain ideas of gender behavior are constantly re-enforced in our daily lives.

My main fascinations lie with gender politics, but I am drawn, overall, to the human experience. I enjoy delving into the inner dynamics of my characters. My films tend to be visually spare in order to amplify the psychological space the characters live in. I enjoy objects, actions and spaces that carry several meanings in the context of the whole. I get an immense amount of satisfaction from a film that has been thought out in every detail, where all the dots connect but many interpretations can follow.
